Staten Island Photos

Staten Island in the early days of the 20th Century was like a small town. These are some photos I have come across through my family. If you recognize anyone in these photos, please post or send me an email, as we would love to connect these photos with families.

PS 41

PS 41 was the school that kids from Grant City,New Dorp and Midland Beach attended. Other kids were enrolled in the parochial schools, which were St. Christopher's, Our Lady Queen of Peace and St. Margaret's. At PS 41, Miss Walsh was a beloved teacher in the 1940's. Many of the kids in these photos probably went on to graduate from New Dorp High School in 1947.

Midland Beach Pool

In its heyday, Midland Beach was a fashionable resort for people from Manhattan. Even into the 1930's, it was a very popular place to swim and picnic, etc. There was a huge pool, often very crowded with kids, as this photo shows.

Staten Island Baseball Teams

Baseball teams looked a lot different in the '30's. Not much in the way of uniforms, and pretty informal. But many people have fond memories of these games, either as players or spectators. A popular place to play was Semler's Field in Grant City, where this photo was taken.
